5 unique decor styles for your small salon or spa - on a budget!

Friends - today is an especially fun topic for me to dive into.

I love me some beautiful interior design inspo, and I have been seeing some very drool-worthy beauty treatment room decor ideas lately. Salon interior design is like any other interior design - it’s all about the little details. I’ve scoured the web for 5 of the top trends in beauty room decor and treatment room design in 2021 - and they are divine.

Today’s post is meant to inspire and delight - and work for your budget, most of all. You can mix and match any aspects of each design so that it works with your brand and salon aesthetic.

First though, let’s talk about your brand. You have one, right? You know, the style, colors, vibe, and values that define you and your beauty business? If not - let’s chat real quick.

Picking a brand and sticking with it can be tricky (but crucially important) at the beginning of building your beauty biz, which is why I always advise my students to make sure they’ve really nailed down the details of their brand package before they jump into designing their salon.

Whether you’re a nail tech, eyelash and brow specialist, hairstylist, sunless tan artist, or esthetician, It’s a very expensive mistake to design a concept that turns out not to align with what you really want your brand to be.

Branding your beauty business is typically split into two categories: your personal brand and your business brand. These two should align and make sense together: your personal brand should reflect and honor your business values, colors, vibes and ideal clients.

When you design a treatment room, it should definitely make sense and compliment the way you share yourself and your beauty business with the world. In the next few months, I’ll be sharing tons of valuable resources and info on building a strong beauty business brand. Today, though, it’s all about the aesthetics!

Boho Chill salon decor

The look: burgundy, bronze, saffron, white and tan everything. Faux fur blankets, throw pillows and rugs. Cacti and desert decor. Lots of layers and a free-flowing sense of design without rules. Loungers close to the ground. Salt lamps and crystals. Macrame hangers and wall fixtures.

The feel: relaxed, calming and super chill - your clients will feel all sorts of zen in a beauty treatment room that’s boho chill. Channel the calm serenity and mystery of the desert with this aesthetic.

My “Boho Chill” Crush: I’m loving The Now Massage and their beautiful treatment rooms for major inspiration:

For your budget:

  • Etsy is a treasure trove for fake plants and cute design details, like fake palm trees and pampas grass. You can also find plenty of vendors that sell macrame material and hangers affordably - so you can either make your own or buy them already assembled!

  • Lots of vendors offer faux fur throws and pillows at super-affordable rates.

  • When it comes to chill lighting options, thinking creatively will stretch your budget much further. You can find affordable bamboo pendant-style lights at lots of vendors online. Salt lamps can be a great vibe, but you can use mason jars with tealight candle holders and drop fake tea lights into them for a similar lighting effect. Paint the outside of the jars in your chosen brand colors for an especially chill vibe!

Clean and Simple salon decor

The look: minimalist, uncomplicated, sleek. Whites and silvers. Clean sharp lines, functional, and understated. Hardwood, minimal plants and simple design details. The occasional use of color-blocking makes this look really pop. This beauty treatment room is eye-poppingly perfect for those who love things clean and in order. No carpets, no dingly-danglies, no art.

The feel: structured, pure and simple, sleek and sexy. Your clients will delight in this absolute haven of order and cleanliness! Memorable and calming in its perfect alignment and detail.

My “Clean and Minimal” Crush: Leo Nail Salon in San Diego is a minimalist paradise!

For your budget: The best part about this look is that you don’t need to add much to it.

  • A neutral shade of paint for the walls (with the option of “shadow boxes” painted behind service areas or wall fixtures, like in the pictures below)

  • a simple color-blocking technique of adding balmy-colored pillows to your chairs

  • a minimalist planter in the corner will make your clean and simple look exude order, functionality, and understated beauty.

  • Invest in good floor polish for your floors, keep your mirrors dust-free and your chairs shiny, and you’ve nailed this look!

Elevated Luxury salon decor

The look: high tea with the Queen meets Palm Springs pixie. Pinks, salmons, all of the wall art, over-the-top chandeliers and plush seating for all. Paint your dreams on your walls, and then polish it with pearls and marble sinks.

The feel: gleeful luxurious chaos. Unabashedly overstated, and absolutely divine. Prepare for constant IG tags.

My Elevated Luxury Crush: Glow Beauty Space in Australia looks like the perfect place to take some snaps for IG!

For your budget: Okay, I know marble, pearls and chandeliers aren’t in most of our budgets, so you’ve gotta get creative for this. Thankfully, there are options.

  • Unique art pieces can be found by tons of cool artists on Etsy, for all types of budgets.

  • Marble sinks might come further down the line in your beauty business career, so why not start off with a few faux marble planters?

  • Check out these super cute affordable salmon seating options!

  • For a high vibe look, buy some gold spray paint and add some gilded touches to some thrifted vases and knobs or drawer pulls. And look at thrifting some adorable tea sets as decor!

Girly, Flirty and Pink salon decor

The look: your childhood bedroom dream decor, all grown up. Fluffy, soft, dreamy, pink. Sparkling decor and long, flirty curtains. Lots of bright lights and adorable pink art. Crushed velvet, plush satin, neon pink street art wall: if you can dream it, you can make it your beauty treatment room.

The feel: Only the cutest, softest, pinkest and flirtiest makes it in this kind of treatment room. Your clients will love how this decor makes them feel - like unicorns are real, pink really is the coolest color, and dreams come true if you only believe. Gushing and taking all of the pics!

My “Girly and Pink” crush: Glow Skincare LA has such an incredible lobby, I’m in love!

For your budget:

  • Etsy has a winning selection of cute pink salon decor, from big flashy pieces to tiny delicate additions - suitable for all budgets!

  • You could pick fresh roses once a week to display, or save your time and money and buy beautiful fake ones that look just as dreamy for an affordable price!

  • Paint will be the biggest helper here: have fun choosing your most adorable shade of pink and go to town on your walls!

  • A splash of adorable pink carpet in waiting rooms or under chairs will make your decor pop.

Lush and Green salon decor

The look: Everything exotic and lush. Black, silver, a pop of tan + gold, and every shade of green known to man. Decor is plants, chairs are leather (or pleather), wall paint (or paper) is definitely nothing neutral. Hardwoods, wildlife art, plant art.

The feel: is this a rainforest, or your favorite salon?! Dark and mysterious, but filled with life. Dripping with exotic magnetism. Your clients will feel like they’ve escaped on safari, or a tropical beach on a humid, stormy night.

My “Lush and Green” crush: Biba hair and beauty salon in New Zealand has created a gorgeous green space that is filled with nature
